I try not to make a habit of crying to a boss, but when they say it's ok I am relieved.
My boss says it's ok to react like a human when you are working with children who are irrational
it's ok to want to hide when they embarrass you in front of other people
its ok when you need to cry in private after a hard day
its ok when you realize you took something too personally
When my boss says it's ok, I am free to move forward,to keep on working, and to support others.
I have had some pretty amazing supervisors over the years. I hope I can one day be the kind of boss who can lead my workers in a way that they feel comfortable coming to me with questions. The other day I had a situation arise during a session with a child and I reacted very emotionally to it. I needed to talk through it logically and separate myself from what I had experienced. My supervisor was willing to listen to me and to talk through what happened so that I could move on with my day. It only took about five minutes, and a few tears were shed, but my supervisor was ok with this. In this field, I have nothing but gratitude for a boss who can get past the tears and deal with the situation so that I can effectively finish my work.
